Adaptogens are a class of herbs and mushrooms that have been used in traditional medicine systems for centuries. They work by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathoadrenal system, helping the body maintain homeostasis during physical and emotional stress.

Common adaptogens include ashwagandha, rhodiola rosea, holy basil (tulsi), and reishi mushroom. Research suggests they may help reduce cortisol levels, improve energy and focus, and support immune function.

The term was coined by Russian toxicologist Nikolai Lazarev in 1947, and adaptogens must meet three criteria: they must be non-specific (helping the body resist a wide range of stressors), they must maintain homeostasis, and they must not harm normal body functions.
