Inflammation

Natural Remedies

Quick Definition

The body's immune response to injury, infection, or irritants, characterized by redness, swelling, heat, and pain.

In-Depth Explanation

Inflammation is a complex biological response triggered when the body's tissues are damaged by harmful stimuli such as pathogens, injuries, or toxic compounds. It is a protective mechanism that helps eliminate the cause of cell injury, clear out damaged cells, and initiate tissue repair.

Acute inflammation is short-term and beneficial -- it helps heal wounds and fight infections. Chronic inflammation, however, persists for weeks, months, or years and is linked to numerous diseases including heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, type 2 diabetes, and autoimmune disorders.

Anti-inflammatory strategies include eating an anti-inflammatory diet (rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains), regular exercise, stress management, adequate sleep, and maintaining a healthy weight. Common anti-inflammatory compounds include curcumin (from turmeric), omega-3 fatty acids, and ginger.
